Defending champions England have not had anything go their way so far in their title defence. With one win in four games, England find themselves eighth in the points table.

Jos Buttler & Co. lost against New Zealand, Afghanistan, and South Africa. Their only win was against Bangladesh. Every encounter is a must-win, if they were to qualify for the World Cup semi-finals.

Sri Lanka are sailing in the same boat as England. India's neighbours have had a tough outing at the 2023 World Cup. Their solitary win in four games came against Netherlands in Lucknow. Sri Lanka are placed seventh - one above England - on the table.

ENG vs SL Probable Playing XIs

England: Dawid Malan, Johnny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (c) (wk), Brydon Carse, David Willey, Mark Wood, Adil Rashid, Gus Atkinson

Sri Lanka: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis (c) (wk), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya De Silva, Dunith Wellalage, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Kusan Rajitha, Dilshan Madushanka

After suffering back-to-back defeats against Afghanistan and South Africa and having lost three out of their first four matches, defending champions England will take on equally struggling Sri Lank in the ICC World Cup 2023’s match 25 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, October 26.

Moeen Ali, who did not feature in the last two games for England will most likely make a comeback to the playing 11. Sri Lanka have added Angelo Mathews to the squad and his presence could be crucial for the batting line-up. Maheesh Theekshan has also been cleared to play in the match against England.

England and Sri Lanka have come up against each other in 78 ODIs. Although the numbers are even stevens with the Lankan team winning 36 matches and the English winning 38, in the last 8 years, the islanders have won only twice in 15 matches against England. In the last two World Cups, it was England who got the better of the team from the Indian Ocean.

Jos Buttler-led England cricket team will take on Kusal Mendis’ Sri Lanka at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, on October 26. Both England (9th spot) and Sri Lanka (8th spot) are currently at the bottom of the points table with just one win in front of their name in 4 matches. Another loss here will almost the losing side out of the tournament as qualifying for the top four will become a next-to-impossible task for them.

England will get a chance, perhaps a final one, to drag their shipwreck of a World Cup campaign, marked by batting and bowling downtime, to less stormy shores when they face fellow strugglers Sri Lanka on Thursday.

The defending champions have two points from four matches, similar to their opponents, and are ninth on the table. A win here will not push them too far ahead on the chart, but it may give them that tiny bit of motivation against teams like India and Australia ahead. But a defeat against Lanka will take away even the benevolence of mathematics, which is currently scaffolding their hopes. To avoid being in the proximity of an early exit, England need improvement through the order, and in particular their batters need to fire. For that, they will not get a more favourable venue than the M Chinnaswamy Stadium with its short boundaries and pitch aiding runs.

If England lacked clarity on several fronts, Sri Lanka are giving them a close run. Sample this. They brought in veteran Angelo Mathews as Pathirana’s replacement when they had a like-for-like pacer in Dushamantha Chameera available among the travelling reserves. It looks like a serious brain fade as Sri Lanka’s main headache is their stingless bowling. They have conceded 428 against SA, 345 against Pakistan and 215 in 35.2 overs against Australia. The Lankan bowlers had reduced the Dutch to 91 for 6, but were generous enough to allow them to reach 262.

It's win or bust for England, as they take on Sri Lanka in the first of five must-win matches to qualify for the semi-finals.

2019 ODI World Cup champions, 2022 T20 World Cup champions, the only team to ever hold both titles at the same time, and yet England are on the brink of elimination. Rarely have tides turned so quickly against a side considered to be the team of a generation.

England have won one and lost three of their first four group stage matches, and in effect, now must win all their remaining games to make the semis. There is a chance you can qualify with five wins and four losses from your nine group games, but it's not a position you want to be in.

Sri Lanka should be beaten, but they've been in good shape with the bat so far this tournament and against an England team shot of confidence, it's anyone’s guess as to what we're about to see in Bengaluru.
