A survey by a 17-year-old boy unveiled that 75 percent of middle school students in his area learned about sex through porn publications or videos, a Hainan newspaper here said. Sufficient sex education at schools seems quite crucial for students' growing-up. [file photo]The results were disclosed on Sunday at the technical innovation contest for young people which opened in Haikou, capital of China's southernmost province of Hainan, according to the Haikou-based Nanguo Dushi Newspaper. Wu Jie, a tall and slim boy, is a senior grade-two student of the Nada No. 2 Middle School, in Danzhou City. Wu said he was grateful to his father for giving him a proper sex education when he was growing up. But he found many fellow students gained sex information through improper ways and mulled conducting a survey by issuing questionnaires. His idea was supported by his teachers and parents. Between March 10 to March 13, Wu sent 800 questionnaires to students and students' parents of three local middle schools and to doctors of hospitals near the schools. The three schools are Wu's own school, the Nada Middle School and the Danzhou Ethnic Middle School. Wu finally collected 644 completed questionnaires. Based on information provided by the questionnaires and analysis, Wu found that sex education for middle school students was weak. The overwhelming majority, or 90 percent of surveyed students, hoped that schools would open sex courses, while 90 percent of parents avoid giving sex knowledge to children. In this circumstance, 75 percent of middle schoolg students ained sex information through porn books or porn websites. When asked for advice, many students hoped that authorities would increase the crackdown on "porn culture." Doctors surveyed responded that the lack of sex education is likely to cause teenage pregnancy and some said they had treated students contracting sexual diseases, most of whom were between 16 and 18. Wu suggested that schools offer proper sex education as soon aspossible and parents take responsibility in guiding children to learn sex in a healthy and scientific way, and the government should launch harsh battles against "porn culture."

Pornography is not usually a subject taught in public high schools, but one educator in Boston is trying to change that. Surrounded by a group of students in the offices of the Boston Public Health Commission, Jess Alder discusses the origins of the word pornography before delving into a deeper discussion.

"In 1857 the word porn was actually created. ... It's a Greek word and it combines two words: porne and graphine," Alder explains. "That is combining the word 'prostitute' and 'describe,' so it's the idea of describing prostitutes."

Jess Alder is the program director of Start Strong, a Boston-based peer leadership program that helps high school students grapple with a variety of intimate topics like dating violence prevention, gender and sexuality, and healthy breakups. In 2016, a new course was added to the list: Porn Literacy. Dr. Emily Rothman, professor of Community Health Sciences at Boston University and co-creator of the course, was inspired by the interest she found that kids had in the topic.

"I went to talk to kids who were involved in the Start Strong after-school program and I was there to do a usual lecture about dating violence," Rothman explains. "We realized that the kids were feeling a little bored by the usual discussion of dating violence and consent and respect, and that talking about some research that I had done on pornography really lit up the room."

The program's creators, Rothman, Alder and Nicole Daley, the former program director of Start Strong, decided that teens' enthusiasm for porn would allow them an entry point to educate students about dating violence and relationship boundaries. It's an especially important message because some research suggests teen boys who regularly viewed porn are more likely to perpetrate sexual coercion or abuse, and are also more likely to hold negative gender attitudes.

A Start Strong participant named Jay agrees that the basic sex education he got in school was not enough. "We learned about the anatomy. We learned about STIs," he said. "I never really learned about the social aspect of it."

In the age of high-speed internet and streaming video, access to porn has never been easier, and research shows that pornography consumption has increased. The American Psychological Association also found, in a survey of 330 men, the average age of first exposure to porn was 13.37 years old.

Alder says her personal experience in working with students confirms this: "I think it would be really challenging for young people to try to avoid not seeing porn at this point. We hear from our young people that as soon as it hits midnight their timeline is now filled with sexually explicit images."

"I wish that it were a lot easier to insulate kids so that they didn't see sexually explicit media," she said. "Until that time though, because pornography, sexually explicit media, is widely available on the internet and elsewhere, I think it makes sense to equip them with critical thinking skills so that when and if they do see it, they have a better appreciation for what they're seeing and whether it reflects reality, [rather] than trying to put pornography totally out of their reach as the only strategy and not really giving them the skills that they need to unpack it when they do see it."

Hubbard said that when she pointed out the sole person on their list who was a candidate in the Hope district, one woman, Miki Hammel, claimed the person had lied about her son, who had been disciplined in high school.

It was an episode in the culture wars now taking place throughout the country and in Santa Barbara. The problem here is that the flyer was highly inaccurate: The book is not a textbook. It is in the Santa Barbara High School library, clear across town from Monte Vista and the Hope School District. And it was selected by accredited school staff; not one of the candidates listed had anything to do with it.

For example, choking or strangulation during sex has been increasing in porn. This is concerning to violence researchers, neurologists and mental health professionals because recent reports indicate that 1 in 3 women were choked during their last sexual experience. Although the majority of women reported feelings of euphoria, strangulation during sex carries the same risk for brain damage due to loss of oxygen as being strangled in other contexts.

Title IX, a federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities that receive federal funding, can potentially be used to address nonconsensual pornography in high schools. When school administrators know or reasonably should know about nonconsensual pornography, Title IX requires them to take prompt and effective steps to end the harassment, prevent its recurrence and address its effects. This can include conducting investigations, taking disciplinary action against the individuals involved and providing support and resources for affected students.

I personally would never get into a relationship with someone who regularly engages with pornography and most of the people that I choose to interact with share the view that porn is what it is, harmful. Therefore, most of our conversations surrounding the subject serve as a critic of its long-lasting effects and contributions to violence and subjugation against women.

This is an especially good point, and also one of my biggest critiques of the industry. Porn does not simply glorify violence, it glorifies and normalizes violence of men against women. Most porn or popular porn contains some sort of slapping or choking or hairpulling, things that are now mostly accepted to be part of sex and not boundaries to be discussed with your partner, something that needs to be consented to. I think it serves to teach young boys that this sort of taking, this violence, is okay, is something they are allowed to do, something women want and expect from them. And that is seriously dangerous for their development and the way they view and interact with women as they grow.

In a complaint filed with the court, an agent says Fanelli told investigators that he first viewed child pornography as sex-abuse research for the classes he was teaching at a grade school and a middle school. But he added that he then began viewing the images "for personal interest," the complaint said.

After deliberating for 11 hours over two days, jurors convicted Kelly of three counts each of producing child pornography and enticement, while acquitting him of obstruction of justice, one count of production of child porn and three counts of receiving child porn. 041b061a72
